How to Make Your own Cheese Wax
August 13, 2018
Measurement conversions for beeswax
1 Tablespoon = ½ ounce
2 Tablespoons = 1 ounce
¼ c (4 Tblsp) = 2 ounces
½ cup (8 Tblsp) = 4 ounces (¼ pound)
1 cup (16 Tblsp) = 8 ounces (½ pound)
2 cups (32 Tblsp) = 16 ounces (1 pound)
When the period of air drying the cheese has ended, the time has come to protect the cheese from mold and to prevent it from drying completely.
Ingredients:
13.5 ounces beeswax (I prefer organic beeswax)
2.5 ounces vegetable shortening
- Mix and melt both ingredients in a double boiler. Using a thermometer, remove the mixture from the heat when it reaches 200 degrees F.
- Wait for the temperature to go down to around 160-180 degrees F.
- It’s time to dip the cheese: dip the cheese and remove it in a quick and smooth motion.
- Repeat until the cheese wax is about 1/16 of an inch thick.
