Explaining Essential Oils- Grapefruit Essential Oil

Grapefruit Essential Oil

Botanical Name: Citrus paradisi

What is it?

Grapefruit is a citrus essential oil that is cold pressed. It has an energizing tropical scent that can be used both aromatically and topically and even in foods and beverages.

How can I use it?

(Never start or stop any natural remedy without first checking with your healthcare provider)

Appetite Suppressant.  Studies have shown that grapefruit can impact the brain’s olfactory stimulation and increases the activity of certain sympathetic nerves that impact appetite, therefore reducing overall food intake. Internal use, applying and diffusing grapefruit essential oil can be a possible aid in weight loss.

H pylori treatment. Helicobacter pylori bacteria is a medical condition that can cause ulcers in the lining of your stomach or the upper part of your intestine and can be possibly treated naturally with grapefruit essential oil. Grapefruit has been shown to have antimicrobial properties that not only treated certain types of bacteria but also prevented bacterial growth.

Mood Booster.  Diffusing essential oils has been shown to improve symptoms of anxiety and depression and be a safe, natural method to manage feelings of hopelessness and stress management. Diffusing or topically applying grapefruit essential oil can be a holistic treatment that can benefit your mental health.

What are the benefits?

A powerful component of Grapefruit essential oil is d-limonene. Limonene is used in food, drinks and also as a flavoring additive. It is also used in pharmaceuticals when limonene is added to medicinal creams to aid in absorption into the skin.

What are the risks?

Grapefruit and other citrus essential oils can be phototoxic, meaning it can increase the sun’s impact on your skin. Do not use before tanning or if you will be in direct sunlight.

Use caution when diffusing this essential oil around pets. Agitation and hypersalivation have been reported in cats and lethargy and vomiting were reported in dogs.

Be sure you are using a bio-friendly, 100% therapeutic grade oil. Do not ingest a low-quality oil, as they may be filled with other products and not 100% pure.
