Is Nail Polish toxic?

A fresh manicure is one of the best ways to practice pampering and self-care, but did you know that some of the ingredients in nail polish can be possibly toxic to your health?

A research study performed by Duke University revealed that the majority of nail polish products contain hormone-disrupting chemicals that are indeed health hazards such as Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) which is a chemical used as a flame retardant.

It is also concerning that most nail hardening products contain formaldehyde, which is a known toxin. Because of this, the FDA has issued a limit on the amount of formaldehyde allowed in nail care and beauty products. But the argument is that any exposure is not the best choice for anyone’s health.

Currently, there are no American laws that require cosmetic companies to report complaints to the FDA. If certain nail polish brands are causing health concerns, the public may not be made aware of it.

Below is a list of ingredients you may want to avoid when choosing a nail polish product:

Acetyl triethyl citrate

Butyl alcohol

Benzene

Benzophenones

Camphor

Ferric ammonium ferrocyanide.

Ethyl tosylamide

FD&C and D&C colors

Formaldehyde

Toluene sulfonamide

Nanoparticle titanium dioxide (and other nanoparticles)

Xylene

Fortunately, there are nail polish companies that offer non-toxic nail care options. It is important to fully research the ingredients in any product you are going to put on or in your body. You can still enjoy a great manicure, just be smart about choosing your nail polish brand!
