Patchouli Essential Oil

Botanical Name: Pogostemon cablin

What is it?

Patchouli is a perennial herb with pastel pink flowers that is typically found in the tropical regions of Asia. Patchouli essential oil is made by extracting through steam distillation of dried leaves.

How can I use it?

Aromatherapy. Patchouli essential oil is a favorite scent that is typically paired with earthy scented essential oils such as eucalyptus, sandalwood and tea tree. It can be used to induce a calming atmosphere and also to promote relaxation.   

Bug Repellent. Patchouli essential oil has been shown to be an effective insect repellent that is not only natural but non toxic. Spraying patchouli essential oil is safe in your home, car or office and can kill pesky bugs such as ants and flies. It can also prevent infestations and be used as a bug preventative.

Skin Protection. Science Direct reported an article with research completed by the Journal of Ethnopharmacology that showed topical administration of patchouli oil prevented UV radiation-induced cutaneous photoaging in mice, which suggests that patchouli oil may prevent skin damage from excess sun exposure.

 

What are the benefits?

Patchouli essential oil has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and bug repellent properties and is a wonderfully scented oil that is a favored scent in multiple aromatherapy blends.

What are the risks?

People who are on anticoagulant medications (blood thinners) and those with bleeding diseases such as hemophilia should avoid patchouli oil. You should also not use this oil before or directly after having major surgery.
