What is it?

Turmeric is a perennial plant that is in the same family as ginger and cardamom. Turmeric is made by the steam distillation method from extracted turmeric roots of the Curcuma longa plant.

How can I use it?

Anti-Inflammatory- Turmeric has been used for centuries to reduce pain and inflammation in the body and is a highly recommended natural alternative to traditional anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen. Some people with conditions such as arthritis and gout have seen benefits from using turmeric.  Studies have exhibited this natural remedy is effective in treating inflammatory conditions.

Neurological Disease Treatment- An ingredient in turmeric called turmerone is a bioactive substance that inhibits microglia activation. Microglia are cells located in the spinal cord and throughout the brain. In diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s turmeric has been used as an adjunct alternative therapy to help manage, slow the progression of and also possibly prevent future neurological symptoms.  Though there is no cure for these conditions, turmeric is often used to help manage them and there is increasing research suggesting using turmeric can aid in the management of post stroke and spinal cord injury rehabilitation.

Cholesterol Reduction- Research suggests that the main ingredient in turmeric; curcumin may be effective in reducing cholesterol levels. Curcumin has multiple antioxidant and healing properties, making it a possible alternative treatment to taking statin medications.

What are the benefits?

Turmeric essential oil has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties which make it a highly recommended ingredient in many holistic and ayurvedic remedies.

What are the risks?

People with gallbladder problems should avoid ingesting turmeric, as it may trigger worsening symptoms.

Patients on blood thinning medications should also avoid use of turmeric and similar oils such as ginger due to the possibility of increasing the blood thinning effect of these medications.

Chemotherapy recipients and those on dialysis should also use caution when using turmeric.

Turmeric is a highly concentrated substance and can cause worsening of issues such as acid reflux, GERD and stomach ulcers. Use caution if you have been diagnosed with conditions such as Crohns disease or ulcerative colitis.
