The 411 On Activated Charcoal: What you need to know
The 411 on Activated Charcoal
When most people hear of charcoal, they think of the black, rock like substance used at cookouts to start grill fires. But did you know there is another form of charcoal that has many health benefits? Activated charcoal can be formed from bamboo, wood or olive pits but is mainly created from coconut shells. The process of creating activated charcoal happens when the char substance is heated to a high temperature. These high temperatures change the chemical structure of the char substance, increasing the surface area and “activating” the charcoal.
This form of charcoal can be used to provide many health benefits. Activated charcoal has a negative electrical charge which causes it to attract toxins and gases. This form of charcoal is non-toxic and cannot absorbed by the human body, which allows it to freely carry the toxins out of the body through the feces.
Hospitals frequently use activated charcoal to treat patients suffering from drug overdose or poisoning from cyanide, lithium or alcohol. Medical research has shown that when a single dose of 50–100 grams of activated charcoal is taken within five minutes of toxic ingestion, it may reduce drug absorption in adults by up to 74%. Activated charcoal has also been used to safely treat cholestasis in pregnancy, certian digestive issues and reduce cholesterol levels.
You can also incorporate the healing benefits of activated charcoal right at home in the following ways.
1-For better skin! Activated charcoal can easily remove bacteria, chemicals and dirt on the skin when used as a face scrub or exfoliating agent.
2- For better oral hygiene! Dipping your toothbrush in a small amount (1/2 tsp maximum) of activated charcoal no more than once a week (due to its potency) can help freshen your mouth, prevent cavities and even whiten your teeth! Note- Do not swallow. Use only as a mouth rinse.
3- For cleaner air! Activated charcoal’s chemical state of negative electrical charge makes it great at removing odors, harmful chemicals and allergens from the air. Placing it around your home or utilizing it in your homemade sprays or homemade candles can help remove toxins and odors from the air.
4- For Detoxification! Using activated charcoal has been an old folk remedy to cure hangovers for centuries but it is also a great way to detoxify your body. To use, mix 1-2 teaspoons with 8oz of water and drink. Due to its intense detoxifying effects, it is important to stay hydrated and drink extra water after you ingest it.
Always check with your medical professional before starting or stopping any product, substance or treatment. This information should not be used to diagnose, treat or manage any condition. Do not use activated charcoal as a supplement if you take the following medications: Acetaminophen, digoxin, theophylline or tricyclic antidepressants. Activated charcoal may also reduce absorption so do not use it at the same time as you take your vitamins, supplements or medications.
